Description:

Technology Description

This technology describes vegetable-oil-based styrene-free UPE resins, which are mainly derived from abundant, inexpensive, renewable and readily available vegetable oils.

Applications

The resins can be easily used for production of fiber-reinforced composites having mechanical properties and water resistance that are comparable or even superior to those from existing styrene-containing UPE resins.

Background of Invention

Unsaturated polyester (UPE) resins as thermosetting resins for fiber-reinforcing composites are widely used for automobile parts, boat hulls, oil tanks, pipes, bath tubs. Most existing UPE resins contain a high amount of volatile styrene classified as a reasonably anticipated human carcinogen.

Status

The technology has been fully developed and characterized in a laboratory scale and is ready for a scale-up application.
