Description:

Summary
The current technology is designed to limit the growth and spread of drug-resistant pathogens in hospitals by providing a UV-C LED Pathogen mitigation drain cover device for hospital sinks.  The device is a drain cap that can be quickly installed on hospital sinks and provides effective control of biofilm growth than current solutions.

Technology Overview
Patients staying in hospital are at risk of infection from multiple different drug-resistant pathogens, which can cause significant health complications. These pathogens can build up in the biofilm of hospital sinks, particularly in patient rooms.

OHSU researchers designed the UVsynC to provide a more efficient and effective way to prevent the spread of bacteria and pathogens in patient area sinks. Features of the UVsynC include:

  • Designed as a drain cover for quick and easy installation over hospital sink drains.
  • Mitigates splash back of aerosolized pathogens.
  • Provides a regular or customizable sterilization cycle with high-powered UV-C LED.
  • Device operation controllable with either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth technology.
  • Inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor allows for prolonged battery life by triggering activation only with the detection of running water from the sink.
  • Safety feature to prevent UV-C LED activation to occur if the drain cover is removed from the sink or mispositioned.
  • Wireless charging to prevent water infiltration and increase the longevity of the device.
